December 21, Sunday
San Antonio’s Christmas Bird Count
The annual survey of all birds within a count area, with teams of several people walking and driving. All skill levels are needed (non-members welcome) and this is a great way to get out and see birds. There will be experienced birders on each team to assist with bird identification. Count hours are from dawn to dusk, rain or shine. Other hours may be arranged with Ernie Roney, the count leader. Teams are assigned in advance so call Ernie for details or to volunteer.Count totals are tallied at a local restaurant after a day in the field; attendance at the dinner is not mandatory.

Canyon Lake and New Braunfels Airport fields
This mostly driving trip may not be suitable for everyone, as we will be looking for specific rare birds (loons, Greater Scaup, Winter Wren and longspurs, primarily) with no guarantee of success. Meet at 8:00 am at the Super S market in Startzville. Take US 281 north to Highway 46. Go east on highway 46 to Farm Road 3159 (Smithson Valley Raod). Turn left on 3159 and continue to the light in Startzville (about 7 miles); Super S Market immediately ahead. Bring money for lunch and $5.00 for park entrance fees. Leader: Bob Doe

Mitchell, Braunig and Calaveras Lakes
Meet leader Bob Doe at Mitchell Lake at 7:00 am (note the time). The entrance is on Moursund/Pleasanton Road, 0.7 mile south of Loop 410 (exit 46) in south San Antonio; the gate is locked behind us, so watch the time. Braunig and Calaveras Lakes require a small park entry fee.

Southside Missions and Espada Acequia
Meet leader Andy Garcia at Mission San Juan. Directions: From Loop 410 in SE San Antonio, take South Presa Street northwest about 2 miles to Graf Road (on the left). Turn onto Graf and proceed past Ashley Road to the mission complex.

November 23, Sunday, 8:00 AM
Pullin Ranch
A total of 67 species were seen during last year’s trip. Brush-country birds are the specialty. I-37 south to FM 99, exit right to Whitsett. Go through Whitsett past railroad tracks to Pullin Lane on the left at edge of town. Bring lunch and water; wear long pants and heavy shoes for this walking trip. Driving time about 1 hour, 15 min. November 9, Sunday
SAAS Picnic and Birding Day
at the Haggard Ranch in southwest Bexar County, 250 acres with varied brush, trees, and open habitat with water (and an Osprey). Members--come early for the morning birding: the combo lock on the gate will be set to “2020,” and feel free to bird the property. Children are invited, and fishing is available. We’ll eat at around 3:00 pm. Bring a dish to share (a portable bbq will be available if you wish to grill) and drinks for your family, and bring chairs.

Meet Helen Rejzek in the parking lot at the park entrance. Go west on US 90 through Castroville, turn left at Athens Street and follow the signs to the park. Good chances for kingfishers, sparrows, and hawks.

Bamberger Nature Park/Leon Creek Greenway
Meet leader Sheridan Coffey at the parking lot on the SOUTH side of Babcock Road, where Babcock crosses Leon Creek. To reach this parking lot, take Babcock south from Loop 1604 (near UTSA campus) or take De Zavala west from I-10 and turn right onto Babcock.

Government Canyon State Natural Area
Meet at the entrance on Galm Road in western Bexar County (gate closes behind us at 8:00 AM). Galm Road is located on the north side of Culebra Road (FM 471) about 2.5 miles west of Taft High School. Turn right on Galm Road and go north about 1.5 miles to a sharp turn to the right. The entrance to Government Canyon is on the left immediately before the turn. Leaders: Helen Rejzek and Linda McMahan. Bring water, sunscreen, and snacks. Wear sturdy walking shoes. We can stay over for lunch at the cabin.

September 24, Wednesday
Leaderless trip to the Hazel Bazemore Park Hawkwatch site
This is the peak of the Broad-winged Hawk migration, with over 300,000 possible per day! Hawks generally rise from the river below the site by 10:00 AM, but the peak kettles may be in the afternoon. Arrive anytime, but bring chocolate! (inside joke); also bring a chair, sunglasses and hat. Take IH-37 SE toward Corpus Christi. Exit onto US 77 south, then exit at the first exit (Highway 624). Go right (west) for about 1/2 mile and watch for entrance to Hazel Bazemore park on your right.

Comanche Lookout Park
at 15550 Nacogdoches (north of intersection with Judson Rd.) in NE San Antonio. We will bird the brush and trees looking for residents and migrants, then settle onto the western point of the ridge to investigate the location as a hawkwatch site. This time of year is the peak of migration of Mississippi Kites, Swallow-tailed Kites (how lucky do you feel?) and the beginning of the main migration of buteos. Bring sunscreen, food, drink and a place to sit if you plan on staying for the hawkwatch.

August 23, Saturday, 8:00 AM
Calaveras and Braunig Lakes
Meet at the boat ramp just inside the entrance to Calaveras Lake; from the intersection of Rt. 181 and Loop 1604 in SE Bexar Co, take Loop 1604 NW for about 1 mile to Stuart Rd.; turn left onto Stuart and take the first left to the park. This trip is specifically looking for Least Bitterns and migrating rails; wear shoes and clothes that can get muddy. Bring lunch or money for fast food. $4 entrance fee ($2 seniors and children) covers admission to both lakes.

Choke Canyon State Park
Meet leader Mike Creese at the entrance gate to the South Shore unit. Bring lunch, water, hat, sunscreen, and money for the entrance fee. About 75 miles south of San Antonio; exit IH-37 at Three Rivers and continue on US 281; take State Hwy 72 west from Three Rivers about 4 miles

Hornsby Bend (Austin)
Although the trip will focus on early returning shorebirds, we will also bird the trails along the Colorado River. Meet at 8:00 am at the entrance to Hornsby Bend sewage plant. Directions: Take IH-35 north to SH 71 in south Austin. Take 71 east past the airport to FM road 973. Turn left toward Manor. Entrance on your left in about 1 mile. Leader Bob Doe. Palmetto State Park
Meet at the headquarters on Park Road 11 in Ottine at 8:00 AM. Go east on I-10 to the exit to Gonzalez, US 183. Turn right (south) on US 183 to Park Road 11 and the entrance to the Park. Allow 12 hours. Bring lunch, water and mosquito repellant. Target birds are the usual nesting species: Northern Parula, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Tufted Titmouse, Pileated Woodpecker (if we get lucky). Small state park fee or use your TPWD Conservation Passport.

May 31, Saturday
Lost Maples State Natural Area
Meet leader Eric Brierley at the entrance at 8:00 AM. You can arrive earlier and bird around the entrance area, but the office doesn’t open until 8:00 AM. There’s a small State Park fee or use your Conservation Passport. Bring lunch and water and good walking shoes. They have a camping area if you arrange with TPWD reservations in advance. Directions: Take Hwy 16 to Medina, turn left (west) on 337 to Vanderpool, and north on RR 187 to the park. Allow 2 hours travel time.

The Schaezler Ranch
Don and Susan Schaezler welcome us to their great bird-watching oasis near Cibolo. Exit northbound I-35 at Old Wiederstein Road (exit #176, the next one after Rt. 3009 to Garden Ridge) and turn right on Old Wiederstein. After about a mile, turn left on Old Wiederstein. Go about 1.5 miles to their gate—19349 Old Weiderstein Road—on the right, which is 0.6 mile past Dean Road on the right. There is some walking around in their woods and fields and lots of warbler watching right in their back yard full of fountains and perches. Perfect for those who don’t want to walk very far; their place is fairly handicapped accessible. Bring your snacks and drinks for a great morning; bring lunch and stay as long as you want.

Maverick Ranch
with owners Bebe and Mary Fenstermaker. Meet at the gate to their ranch on Boerne Stage Road in NW Bexar County. Exit I-10 west at Leon Springs. Turn left on Boerne Stage Road. Drive 3 miles to the stop sign and turn right on Boerne Stage Road. Go 1.4 miles to their gate on the left. We will be looking for Golden-cheeked Warblers and checking on the progress of their Black-capped Vireo habitat restoration project on this historic ranch. Bring snack to eat on their porch. Coffee and Mary’s famous brownies may be served.

Applewhite Properties
James Middleton will lead this trip to benefit the Land Heritage Institute Foundation; $3 fee per person. Meet at the SAWS Neal Road gate, 1.2 miles east of Applewhite Road or 2.2 miles west of Pleasanton Road in southern Bexar County. Bring snacks and water, and wear long pants. This trip is mostly walking and will include the area around the Watson-Presnell house, the Applewhite house ruins, and the Medina River bottom. No restroom facilities.

Pipes' Ranch, south of Pleasanton [SAAS members only]
Meet at 7:30 AM at east end of HEB parking lot on Rt. 281 on the south side of Pleasanton in Atascosa County . Bring Snacks and water, sunhat and sunscreen. This is a walking trip in brush country. Requires contact with Georgina Schwartz in case big rains cause changes in plans. Lunch and an extension to the city park are optional.

SAAS field trip to Northeast San Antonio
Meet Mariann Golden on the corner of Perrin-Beitel and Briar Glen. Briar Glen is south of 410 before you reach Austin Highway. We will bird along Perrin Creek, El Dorado ponds, Friesenhahn Park, and Comanche Lookout Park. We will see the winter birds that are here, wintering ducks, and I hope the Am. Bittern. Bring water and snacks. We will take a break at a fast food place.

SAAS field trip to Cartwright Ranch
Meet leader Jean Bensmiller at the causeway over Lake Corpus Christi; arrive early if you want to bird there. About 2 hours south of SA; take I-37 south to exit 47 (Swinney Switch), go to the intersection of FM 534. Turn right on 534 toward Dinero and go about a half mile; park off the road before you reach the causeway. Carpooling is encouraged; Jean will lead the caravan to the ranch gate. Bring lunch and water; no restrooms, but there’s a convenience store in Swinney Switch. Probable Green Jays, Great Kiskadee and lots more.
