Volunteers are needed for this day-long event, all levels of experience are welcome. Walk (or drive) a specified area and count the species you see. Contact Bob Doe for info or area assignments. There is a $5 participation fee to pay for compiling and publication of data.

SAAS Field trip to Pullin Ranch

Annual trip for typical brush country birds SE of San Antonio. Take I-37 south to FM 99, exit right to Whitsett. Go through the [small!] town of Whitsett, past the railroad tracks, turn left on Pullin Lane at edge of town. (If you get to the Atascosa River Bridge, you’ve gone too far.) Bring lunch and water. Wear heavy shoes for walking in the brush. Drive time at least 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Meet at Susan and Don Schaezler’s home, 19349 Old Wiederstein Road in Cibolo at 8:00 AM. From I-35 northbound, take Exit 176. Stay on the access road and turn right onto Wiederstein Road. After about 1/2 mile, turn left onto Old Wiederstein Road. Continue past Dean Road 4/10 mile to the driveway and green mailbox on the right.

A tour of Calaveras, Braunig and Mitchell Lakes. Meet leader Bob Doe at 8:00 AM at the boat ramp just inside the entrance to Calaveras Lake. Bring entrance fees ($4 for Calaveras and Braunig combo, $2 for Mitchell) and lunch or money for fast food. Directions: From the intersection of Loop 1604 and US 181 in SW Bexar County, go east on Loop 1604 to Stuart Road. Turn left on Stuart to the entrance to Lake Calaveras on the left.

Early September is the peak of shorebird migration, both in terms of diversity and numbers. This field trip will concentrate on shorebirds. SAAS Field trip to O.P. Schnabel Park and Leon Creek Greenway
Meet leader Bob Doe at 7:30 at the parking lot by the soccer fields just inside the entrance to the park. The entrance is on the east side of Bandera Road [9600 Bandera Road], opposite Braun Road, in NW San Antonio. The creek bottom along Leon Creek has historically been a good place for migrant warblers and flycatchers. Note: The walk down to the creek bottom is steep, rocky and slippery.

SAAS Field trip to Bastrop State Park

Meet leader Bob Doe at the pay station at the park entrance at 8:00 AM. Bastrop State Park is a detached remnant of the “Piney Woods” of east Texas. We’ll be looking for Pileated Woodpecker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Pine and Black-and-white Warbler, Yellow-throated Vireo, etc. Bring lunch or lunch money. In the afternoon, we’ll check for early shorebirds at Hornsby Bend in Austin. Directions: Take I-35 north to San Marcos. Exit and take Highway 80 east a short distance to Highway 21. Turn left (north) and follow Highway 21 to Bastrop. Outside of Bastrop, turn right on Highway 71. In Bastrop, turn left onto loop 150 (Chestnut Street, right after the hospital) and follow to the park entrance. Allow 2 hours from San Antonio. Park entrance fee required.

Meet leader Bob Doe in the parking lot at 7:30 AM. One last chance for Golden-cheeked Warblers before they head south. Other target birds are Hutton’s Vireo (regular, but sparse) and Bushtit (at least one pair successfully fledged young this year). Moderate walking (we’ll go at least to the ridgetop along the south edge of the park). Directions: Take I-10 west past loop 1604, exit at Camp Bullis Road. Go under the freeway and turn right onto the access road. Follow signs to the park. Map

Uvalde County offers opportunities for brush country birds not regular in San Antonio (Black-throated and Olive Sparrow, Ringed Kingfisher, Black Phoebe, among others).

Mature riparian habitat offers the opportunity for late migrants and nesting birds. Easy walking (about 3 miles). Directions: Take SH 16 south from Loop 410 in south San Antonio 4.2 miles to the park entrance on the left just before you cross the Medina River. If you miss the turn (it is unmarked), cross the river, make a U-turn at the first crossover, re-cross the river and turn right into the first road (driveway).

SAAS Field trip to Government Canyon State Natural Area

Meet leader, Georgina Schwartz at the gate at the sharp turn on Galm Road in west Bexar County. From Loop 1604, drive west about 3 miles on FM 471/Culebra Road, turn right on Galm Road, go about 1.5 miles to the gate on the left at the sharp turn to the right. There will be a long hike up the canyon or a shorter trip around the lowlands. Moderate walking is required; wear good hiking shoes. Bring water and snacks or lunch. Spring birds and possible Golden-cheeked Warblers. We can stay for lunch and all be out by 2:00 PM. Free, but contributions to the park fund are welcome.

Birding field trip to Haggard Ranch

A joint trip with the Native Plant Society. Meet leader Metha Leslie at 8:00 AM for a 2-hour birding only trip (additional birding opportunities will be available). Go south on IH 35. About 4 miles south of Loop 1604, take exit #137 (Shepherd Road) off IH 35, go left over the interstate, take another left onto the northbound access road. Drive 0.5 mile to gate (cattle guard and US Flag). Once through the gate, go over the second cattle guard and go left at the fork to the house.

Meet leader Mike Creese at 8:00 AM at the entrance to the South Shore Unit. Take IH 37 toward Corpus Christi. Exit at Three Rivers (US 281 exit). In the town of Three Rivers, turn right onto highway 72 and go about 3 miles to the South Shore Unit entrance. Allow about 1 1/2 hours travel time. State Park entrance fee.

Early Spring is a great time to look for migrating raptors, cranes, anhinga, and others. Meet Bob Doe at 8:00 a.m. at the Comanche Lookout parking lot, located on Nacogdoches Rd., just east of Judson Rd. in NE San Antonio.

This as-yet-unopened park along the Medina River offers well developed riparian habitat. Early migrants and late winter visitors expected. Meet Georgina Schwartz at 8:00 a.m. at the park entrance off State Highway 16, just north of the Medina River crossing in South Bexar County. Access to the park is from the NORTHBOUND lanes. [From Loop 410 and TX 16 south, go south on 16 for 4.2 miles to the left turn lane at the entrance to the park just before the Medina River bridge.]

Meet leader Helen Rejzek at 8:00 a.m. at the park entrance. Trip designed specifically to look for recently arrived Golden-cheeked Warblers. Rufous-crowned Sparrows should be singing along the ridgetop. Expect to walk entire loop trail, 3 miles (Vista Loop & Main Trail) [a walking stick helps]. From Loop 1604 and IH 10 in NW San Antonio, take IH 10 west (toward El Paso) exit at Camp Bullis Road. Turn left under the freeway, then right on the western access road. Follow signs to the park. NOTE: Be prepared for muddy conditions.

SAAS Field trip to Rio Grande Valley

An unprecedented influx of Mexican species has appeared in the Rio Grande Valley this year. Hopefully some will stay for our trip. Itinerary will depend on participant desires and what is currently being seen. Locations are likely to include Bentsen-Rio Grande State Park, Frontera Audubon Sanctuary, and Santa Ana NWR, among others. Participants should make lodging reservations for Friday through Sunday nights. Suggested lodging is at Holiday Inn Express, 2000 S. 10th St, McAllen TX 78501, phone 1-956-686-1741. Advertised room rate is $59/night. Bring food/snacks for field lunches; expect “fast food” breakfasts and restaurant dinners (casual). Meet 7:00 am in the lobby of above motel on Saturday, Feb. 19. Meet leader Jean Bensmiller at the causeway on FM 534 over Lake Corpus Christi; arrive early if you want to bird there. About 2 hours south of SA: take IH-37 south to exit 47 (Swinney Switch), go to the intersection of FM 534. Turn right on 534 toward Dinero and go about a half mile; park off the road before you reach the causeway. Carpooling is encouraged; Jean will lead the caravan to the ranch gate. Bring lunch and water; no restrooms, but there’s a convenience store in Swinney Switch. Probable Green Jays, Great Kiskadee and lots more.Map

This agricultural area NE of Austin is an historic site for finding Mt Plover, longspurs, Sprague’s Pipit, Burrowing Owl and others. Meet leader Bob Doe at the entrance to Friendship Park on Granger Lake at 8:00 am. Directions: Take I-35 north through Austin to Round Rock. Exit on US -79 east. Continue on US 79 to Taylor. Turn left (North) on Main Street (Texas 95). Continue on Texas 95 to Granger. Turn right (east) on Davila Street (Road 971) to the entrance to Friendship Park. Allow about 2 1/2 hour drive time. Bring lunch. Fill tank with gas in Taylor.

SAAS Field trip to Mitchell Lake

Meet leader Bob Doe at 8:00 am at the entrance, 0.7 miles south of Loop 410 on Moursund in south San Antonio. Entrance fee: $5. Wear footwear appropriate for walking in tall grass as we will be searching the uplands for LeConte’s Sparrows, Cassin’s Sparrows and other cryptic winter visitors. Map
