San Antonio's Christmas Bird Count

Volunteers are needed for this day-long event. All levels of expertise are welcome. Walk (or drive) a specified area and count the species you see. Contact Sheridan Coffey () for info or area assignments. There is a $5.00 participation fee to pay for the compiling and publication of data. Count totals are tallied at a local restaurant after a day in the field.

SAAS field trip Pullin Ranch

Annual trip for brush country birds SE of San Antonio. Take I-37 south to FM 99, exit right to Whitsett. Go through the small town of Whitsett, past the railroad tracks, turn left on Pullin Lane at the edge of town. Bring lunch and water. Wear heavy shoes for walking around in the brush. We may stop and the feed lot on the way back to look for sandhill cranes and snow geese. Contact Georgina Schwartz . Map

Meet leaders Sandi Wheeler and Dana Green at the Park Office in Ottine, TX. From IH-10 East, exit US 183, and proceed south, then turn southwest on Park Road 11 for two miles. Driving time is about 1-1/2 hours. Bring water and bug spray.

SAAS field trip Calaveras and Braunig Lakes
Meet leaders Sheridan Coffey and Martin Reid at the big parking lot inside the entrance gate at Calaveras Lake at 7:45 AM. We will have the opportunity to bird the primitive area which is closed to the general public so it will be necessary to be on time. Take I-37 South to Highway 181 exit Floresville (exit right, loop over). Proceed to Loop 1604. Take Loop 1604 N east to Stuart Road. Turn left on Stuart Road and take the first left into the park. Will be looking for gulls and winter birds including sparrows. Bring lunch and water. After birding Calaveras we will continue on to Braunig Lake. Entrance fee-$4.00-good for both parks. Reminder: Saturday is the end of Daylight Savings Time.

At the end of the Medina River bridge entering Castroville, turn left in front of the Landmark Inn onto Florence Street and follow the signs to the Castroville Regional Park.

Meet Mike Creese at the Calliham Unit parking lot. Directions: take IH-37 south for about 75 miles. Exit at Three Rivers and continue on US 281. Take SH 72 west from Three Rivers to County Road 302 (R8). Turn right and follow R8 to the Calliham Unit gate. Approximate driving time from San Antonio is 2 hours. Bring lunch, water, and insect repellant. Be prepared to pay the state park entrance fee.

SAAS field trip Leon Creek Greenway

Meet leader Helen Rejzek() in the parking lot of the Leon Creek Greenway (12160 Babcock Road). From IH 10 exit De Zavala and drive west about 1.75 miles to the light at Babcock Road. Turn right on Babcock, the Greenway parking is about 0.7 miles on the left. Depending on the time after birding the Greenway we can drive to Crownridge Canyon Natural Area to bird the park. There are several restaurants close, lunch is a possibility.

Fall Trip to Warbler Woods

This will be a great time to look for fall migrants at Don and Susan Schaezler's place in Cibolo. There will be opportunities to walk around their property or sit in the yard and watch the birds come to the feeders. You are welcome to bring your lunch and stay awhile. From San Antonio take IH 37 toward Austin. Take exit #176(Wiederstein). Turn right on Wiederstein Road at the overpass. Turn left at the next Old Wiederstein road. After you pass Dean Road their property begins on the right. Go to 19349 Old Wiederstein at the green mailbox.

Meet leaders Andy and Wendy Garcia () at the Mission San Juan parking lot. From Loop 410 take S.Presa exit. Go north on S. Presa. Turn left on Graft Road. Trip includes the Missions boardwalk and the surrounding area, approximately 3 miles.

Hawk Watch at Hazel Bazemore County Park

Meet leader Georgina Schwartz ( )anytime after 8:00 A.M. at the Hawk Watch site at Hazel Bazemore Park. The park is located in the NW corner of Corpus Christi in the community of Calallen. From IH 37, take Exit 14, which is Hwy 77 South to Kingsville. Less than one half mile south of Exit 14 is FM 624 (Up River Road). Turn west (right) on 624 for 0.7 miles to a traffic light. The entrance to the park is on the right. Follow this road to the entrance, then bear left and follow the signs to the Hawk Watch. This is full day trip. Bring lunch, drinking water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a chair.

Avenue A and the Botanical Gardens
Meet leader Georgina Schwartz () in the first parking lock on Red Oak which is across from Avenue Agoing north into Brackenridge Park. From there we will take the short walk to Avenue A.Late September is a good time for migrants. Also some of our wintering birds should be arriving.After birding the Avenue, Georgina will be heading tothe Botanical Gardens, another magnet for the birds. There is a fee at the Botanical Gardens.

Meet Sue Carter (home phone 830-947-9182)-ranch phone (830-780-3553) at the Butler Ranch at 8:00 AM. Take I-37 South (about 60 miles) to Exit 88,Road 1099.Turn left on 1099. Travel 1099/407 12 miles to the first stop sign. Turn right at the stop sign onto 2924.Travel on 2924 for less than a mile to 99. Left on 99.Travel on 99 for about 3 miles to 2102. Turn right on 2102. The gate will be on the right in about 1/8 mile. Bring lunch and plenty of water.

We had a great time last year with plenty of migrants and resident birds coming to the wonderful bird blinds. Bring lunch, water, and insect repellent.

Meet leader Derek Muschalek at the Dairy Queen in Yorktown at 7:30 AM. It is at the intersection of Highway 72 and Highway 119. From San Antonio take US 87 S toward Victoria. Continue on 87 S until you reach TX 119,take a right and follow 119 to Yorktown. The Dairy Queen at 510 W. Main Street. From there we will drive to the ranch. Bring lunch and plenty of water. Also don't forget the insect repellent. Allow about 2 hours travel time. It is roughly 95 miles from San Antonio.

SAAS field trip Jackson Nature Park

This is a nice park with varied habitat and access to Cibolo Creek. Meet SAAS leader Eva Fromme at the entrance to the park, there is a fee of $1.00. From San Antonio take I 37 South exit onto 181 south to Floresville. At the stop light in Floresville turn left to take Highway 97 East. Travel 7 miles and turn right at the intersection of Highway 97 and County Road 1922. Travel on 1922 and turn left at the intersection of county road 401. Travel on 401 to the park entrance to your right before you reach Cibolo Creek.

Drive 3 miles to the stop sign and turn right on Boerne Stage Road. Go 1.4 miles to their gate on the left. We will be looking for Golden-cheeked Warblers. Bring water and lunch to eat on their porch.Please do not plan to leave early, the gate will be locked after we enter.

SAAS field trip to Haggard Ranch. Meet Metha Leslie on her ranch in southwest Bexar County. The ranch ,around 250 acres, has varied brush, trees, and open habitat with water. Go south on IH 35 about 4 miles south of Loop 1604,take exit #137(Shepherd Road) off of IH 35,go left over the interstate, take another left onto the northbound access road. Drive 0.5 mile to gate (cattle guard). Once through the gate, go over the second cattle guard and go left at the fork to the house. Info contact Metha Leslie (six two two-3886).

SAAS field trip Whooping Crane Tour aboard the Skimmer in Fulton. Meet leader Helen Rejzek 679-7437 at the Skimmer dock in Fulton no later than 12:20 PM. Please be prompt! The Skimmer is located at 216 N. Fulton Beach Road. Take TX 35 through Rockport. You will make a right on Cactus Street. Turn left on Beach Street/S.Fulton Beach Road. You will see the sign for Rockport Birding and Kayak Adventures, that is where we will be departing. Drinks and food are allowed on the boat.We will return at 4:30PM. At this time the tour is full. You can call Helen Rejzek to see if there has been any cancellations. Cost is $32.00 per person, that needs to be paid in advance. No refunds unless your spot can be filled.
For the people who are spending Saturday night in the Rockport/Fulton area there will be time to bird some areas nearby before heading to the Skimmer.

Meet leader Jean Bensmiller at the causeway on FM 534 over Lake Corpus Christi; arrive early if you want to bird there. About 2 hours south of SA: take IH-37 south to exit 47 (Swinney Switch), go to the intersection of FM 534. Turn right on 534 toward Dinero and go about a half mile; park off the road before you reach the causeway. Carpooling is encouraged; Jean will lead the caravan to the ranch gate. Bring lunch and water. Probable Green Jays, Great Kiskadee and lots more. Map

SAAS field trip to the Butler Ranch.
Meet Sue Carter (home phone 830-947-9182-ranch phone 830-780-3553) at the Butler Ranch.
From 37 South: Take I-37 south (about 60 miles) to Exit 88, Road 1099. Turn left onto 1099. Travel 1099/407 12 miles to the first stop sign. Turn right at the stop sign onto 2924.Travel on 2924 for less than a mile to 99. Turn left on 99.Travel on 99 for about 3 miles to 2102.Gate will be on the right, in about 1/8 miles.   
From 181 South: Take 181 South about 60 miles, through Floresville, Poth, Falls City, to Karnes City. At the Big B gas station just past the new prison, turn right onto FM 99. Take FM 99 through Coy City to the intersection of 2102.(12.8 miles) Turn left on 2102. Gate will be on the right after 1/8 mile.

SAAS Beginner’s Bird Walk
Meet leader Georgina Schwartz at Judson Nature Trails next to Alamo Heights swimming pool. At 5900 block of Broadway in Alamo Heights, turn west on Ogden to stop sign at Greely Street. Turn left one block, then right on Viesca to small parking lot on left before the swimming pool. Binoculars available, everyone is welcome.Map

January 6, Sunday, 8:00 AM
SAAS field trip to McAllister Park. Meet leaders Bill and Marian Collins at the first parking lot inside the park. From the corner of Jones-Maltzberger and Starcrest just north of San Antonio International Airport take Jones-Maltzberger north about 0.75 miles to the park entrance (just past the police station). The first parking lot will be on your left about 1/4 mile inside the park. Great park to look for winter visitors!
