Medina River Natural Area

Meet leader Helen Rejzek (679-7437) in the parking lot of the Medina River Natural Area. From South Loop 410, take the SH-16/Palo Alto exit. Go south on SH-16 for about 4.2 miles to the entrance, which will be on the left just before the Medina River bridge. Bring water and snacks, lunch at a local restaurant. Time permitting, we will bird the Applewhite portion of the park.

Haggard (5H) Ranch

Meet Metha Haggard (622-3886) at her ranch in SW Bexar County. Go south on IH 35. About 4 miles south of Loop 1604, take exit 137 (Shepherd Road). Go left over the interstate and take another left onto the northbound access road. Drive 0.5 mile to the gate (#16290) where there is a cattle guard. The code number for the gate is 2020. Please make sure the gate is completely closed before proceeding to the house. Once through the gate, go over a second cattle guard, then turn left at the fork to reach the house. Bring water and lunch, also sturdy walking shoes.

From North Loop 1604 East, take the Bulverde exit and turn south on Bulverde Road. Continue right on Bulverde, then right on Jones Maltsberger. Lunch at a local restaurant.

Kreutzberg Natural Area

Meet leaders Lee and Betty Pasquali (408-6818) at the headquarters of the natural area. To reach the natural area, travel west on IH-10 and take the first exit into Boerne. Turn right on TX 46 and go to stop light on Esser Road. Turn left and go north to join 474 by the high school. Go on 474 for 6+ miles. At Kreutzberg Road, turn right and continue 2+ miles to Mark Twain Road. Continue 1 mile to the entrance to the park. Lunch at a local restaurant.

Pedernales Falls State Park

Meet leader Sandi Wheeler (632-2812) at the entrance to Pedernales Falls State Park. From San Antonio, take US 281 north to Johnson City. Take a right (east) on FM 2766 and continue for about 9 miles to the park. Bring water, snacks and lunch. Allow about 90 minutes for driving time.

Calaveras Lake

Meet leader Chris Bailey (621-3025) in the large parking lot past the entrance to the lake. We will have access to the primitive area so it is important that you arrive on time! Take I-37 South past the Loop 410 intersection. Take the Highway 181 exit to Floresville, (exit right but loops over). Proceed to Loop 1604. Take 1604 N to Stuart. Turn left on Stuart, go 1 block and turn left into the park. Bring water, snacks, and lunch. Time permitting, we will bird Braunig Lake. Entrance fee is $4.00, which is good for both parks.

Meet Sandi Wheeler (632-2812) at Don and Susan Schaezler's sanctuary near Cibolo. Take IH-35 N toward Austin. Take Exit 176, Wiederstein Road. Turn right on Wiederstein at the overpass. Turn left at the next road, Old Wiederstein. After you pass Dean Road, the Schaezler property begins on the right. Look for the green mailbox, 19349 Old Wiederstein. Lunch at a local restaurant.

Canyon Lake

Meet leader Bob Doe (830-438-8399) at the Valero station at the intersection of US 281 and Farm Road 306 in northern Comal County. During the morning we will look for loons and Greater Scaup on the lake and wintering sparrows in the lakeside brush. In the afternoon, we will bird the trails along the river below the dam. Plan on picnic lunch at Little Jacobs Creek Park.

New Braunfels Fields

Meet leader Bob Doe (830-438-8399) at the parking lot of the Clear Springs Cafe in New Braunfels. Since we will be driving the agricultural fields, it will make it easier if we carpool from there, so please be on time. This trip is probably not appropriate for children or new birders as we will be spending a lot of time searching for rare, local, and hard to see birds, which include longspurs, cranes, and sparrows. From San Antonio take IH-35 north to New Braunfels. Exit at State Highway 46. Take SH 46 east (toward Seguin). The Clear Springs Cafe will be on your right. Bring water and snacks; lunch at a local restaurant.

Meet leader Georgina Schwartz (342-2073) at the main parking lot in the park, 9606 Bandera Road, at the intersection of Braun Road. From the Bandera Road entrance, drive to the first stop sign. Turn left and drive a short distance to the main parking lot near the pavilion.

Jackson Nature Park

Meet leader Eva Fromme (830-393-4176) at the sewer ponds near Stockdale. From San Antonio, take US 87 toward Victoria. Go past the highway TX 97 to Floresville and watch for County Road 401 on the right, which has a brown sign for Jackson Nature Park. Turn right and go as far as the sewer ponds on the left and park on the side of the road. We will observe the sewer ponds for ducks and then proceed to the park, which will be on your left after crossing Cibolo Creek. If you reach Stockdale, you have gone too far. There is a $1.00 fee for the park. Lunch at a local restaurant.

Take the Martinez Street exit and look for the convenience store. From there we will bird some areas around Junction, then continue to S. Llano State Park. Bring snacks, water, and lunch.

There is a large parking lot at the athletic complex. From the parking lot we will walk to the river. Bring water and snacks.

Go west on IH-10 from San Antonio to Boerne, then go left on TX 46 West to Pipe Creek. At Pipe Creek, take Rte 16 right to Bandera. At the light in Bandera, turn right on Main Street and go north to the next light. The restaurant is on the right after the light. Bring snacks and water; lunch at a local restaurant. Meet leader Mike Creese (479-5552) inside the entrance of the park’s Calliham Unit. Go south on I-37 to the Three Rivers exit. In town, turn west on FM 72 and go past South Shore Unit. Continue driving about 10 miles; you will see the sign to the park on your right. Turn right and follow road to the park. Bring lunch and water. There is an entrance fee or use your State Parks pass.

Love Creek Preserve/Medina, Texas

Tour the Nature Conservancy preserve in Medina with Ryan Smith. Two driving options: From Bandera Road/Hwy 16, drive through Helotes and Bandera to the town of Medina. Or take IH-10 West to Boerne. Take 46 west to Pipe Creek and head west on 16 and continue to Medina. Park in the parking lot across from the Apple Store in Medina, which is on the right. Be prompt! We will carpool to the preserve. On the way, we’ll look for Black-capped Vireos and upper slope and grassland birds. From top of trail, we will walk down to canyon—about a mile of moderate to heavy hiking. Check out www.nature.org to learn about the preserve. Bring snacks and water; lunch at local restaurant. To reach the store, follow I-35 S from downtown and take Exit 149 Poteet/Palo Alto Road. Follow the access road for about 1 mile and turn left on to Poteet/Jourdanton Freeway/Highway 422, which turns into Palo Alto Rd./Highway 16 at Loop 410. Continue for about 6 miles past Loop 410 to the store on the NE corner of Highway 16 and Loop 1604.

Hawk Watch, Hazel Bazemore Park, Corpus Christi

Mariann Golden will be at the park anytime after 8:00 AM. The park is in the NW corner of Corpus Christi in the community of Calallen. From I-37 S, take Exit 14, which is Highway 77 south to Kingsville. Less than 1/2 mile south of Highway 77 is FM 624 (Up River Road). Turn west (right) on 624 for 0.7 mile to a traffic light. The entrance is on your right. Follow signs to entrance, then bear left and follow signs to hawk watch. Bring water, sunscreen, snacks, insect repellant, and a chair. Land Heritage Institute

Meet leaders Patsy and Alan Kuentz (apkuentz@aol.com, 210/749-7196 or 210/422-3218), at the convenience store at the intersection of Highway 16 and Loop 1604 West PROMPTLY at 8:00 AM. From the store, we’ll convoy to the LHI property on Neal Road. The LHI board of directors has suggested a $3 per person donation. To reach the store, follow I-35 S from downtown and take Exit 149 Poteet/Palo Alto Road. Follow the access road for about 1 mile and turn left onto Poteet Jourdanton Freeway/Highway 422, which turns into Palo Alto Rd./Highway 16 at Loop 410. Continue for about 6 miles past Loop 410 to the store on the NE corner of Highway 16 and Loop 1604.

Crownridge Canyon Natural Area

Meet leaders Gail Nickel (210/497-7626) and Mariann Golden (210/650-4312) in the parking lot of the park. Take IH-10 West about 1/2 mile past Loop 1604.Take Exit 554 for Camp Bullis Road. Two miles down the access road, take a left under the interstate onto Camp Bullis Road heading west. Proceed another 1.6 miles to Luskey Blvd. and turn right. At the top of the curve, turn right into the park.

Park Chalk Bluff and Uvalde

Meet Tim Katafias (210/557-7415) and Chris Bailey (210/621-3025) at the entrance to Park Chalk Bluff. From San Antonio, take Highway 90 W to Uvalde. In the center of Uvalde, take Highway 83N toward Leakey. Travel approximately 2 miles and go over an overpass on the north side of Uvalde that goes over the railroad tracks. At the bottom of the overpass, take a left turn onto Highway 55 N. Go exactly 15 miles to the park entrance. There is entrance fee of $8.00. After birding the park, we will drive to Uvalde for lunch and some birding in the afternoon. Please contact either Tim or Chris to let them know you are attending

Landa Park/Wurstfest: Birds and Brats

Meet leader Mariann Golden (210/415-4661) in Landa Park in New Braunfels at the corner of Aquatic Drive and Landa Park Drive, which is the train depot. We will walk the nature trail and bird around the lake. Bring water and a snack. After birding, those who wish may go to the Wurstfest for lunch and music. Choke Canyon State Park

Meet leader Mike Creese (210/479-5552) at the entrance parking lot of the Calliham Unit of Choke Canyon State Park. Go south on IH-37 and take the exit to Three Rivers. In town, turn west on FM 72 and go past the South Shore unit for approximately 10 miles. The road to the entrance is on the right. Bring water, snacks, and lunch. There is an entrance fee or use your State Parks pass. On the way home we will make a side trip to the feedlots east of IH 37, usually a good spot to find Sandhill Cranes, Snow Geese, and other interesting birds.

Turn left and go north to join 474 by the high school. Go on 474 for 6+ miles. At Kreutzberg Road, turn right and continue
2+ miles to Mark Twain Road. Continue 1 mile to the entrance to the park.

Calaveras and Braunig Lakes

Meet leader Chris Bailey (210/621-3025) in the large parking lot inside the entrance to Calaveras Lake. We will have access to the primitive area, so everyone
needs to be prompt. We will carpool. The gate will be locked once we drive through. Take IH-37 South past the Loop 410 intersection. Take the Highway 181 exit to Floresville (exit right, loop over). Proceed to Loop 1604. Take 1604 north to Stuart. Turn left on Stuart; go one block and turn left into the park. Bring snacks, lunch, and water. Time permitting, we will bird Braunig Lake. Entrance fee is $5.00, which is good for both parks.
