Birds and Brew at the Medical Center Health Trails

For those who missed the first Birds and Brew walk, here is your chance to bird with Jason “The Birdnerd” St. Sauver. Meet at the parking lot at the corner of Hamilton Wolfe and Ewing Halsell Drive. Meet Georgina Schwartz (210/342-2073) at the Judson Nature Trails. From Broadway at the 5900 block, turn west on Ogden Street to the stop sign at Greely St. and the sign to the Nature Trails. Turn left, go one block and turn right on Viesca to the parking lot on the left before the swimming pool.Map

Calaveras Lake

Meet leaders Chris Bailey (210/621-3025) and Tim Katafias in the large parking lot inside the entrance to the park. We will have access to the gated primitive area, so everyone needs to be prompt. Once in the primitive area, the gate will be locked behind us. Birding the primitive area will depend on the road conditions. We will carpool. Directions to the park are on the Calaveras Lake Park website. Bring water and snacks.
Entrance fee is $6 and $4 for seniors. Time permitting, we will bird Braunig Lake.

Granger Lake Area, NE of Austin

We’ll look for longspurs, Mountain Plovers, raptors and a variety of sparrows. Meet leader Bob Doe at 8:00 am at the entrance to Friendship Park, east of the town of Granger. We will spend the morning in the open farm fields looking for longspurs, and the afternoon in mixed habitat around Granger Lake. Call Bob the night before (830/438-8399) so he knows who is coming. Dress warm; bring lunch and drinks. Directions: From San Antonio, take I-35 north to Georgetown. Exit at Highway 29 east. Turn left onto Texas 95 toward Granger. In Granger, turn right onto County Road 971 (Davilla Street) and follow to Friendship Park. Allow 2.5 hours from San Antonio.

Senator Frank L. Madla Natural Area
Meet leader Zachary Tonzetich (210/232-3670 or (zachary.tonezetich@gmail.com) in the parking lot at 8:00 AM. The park is off of Menchaca Road in Grey Forest near Rancho Diana. Take Bandera Road (Highway 16) to Scenic Loop Road. Make a right on Scenic Loop and continue to Menchaca Road (about 2 miles on the right). Turn right on Menchaca and look for the rock and wood entry gate to the park (right). Bring snacks and water.

Castroville Regional Park

Meet leader Georgina Schwartz (210/342-2073) in the upper parking lot of the park. Take US 90 west to Castroville. At the end of the Medina River Bridge, as
you enter Castroville, turn left in front of the Landmark Inn onto Florence Street. Follow the signs to the park. Bring snacks and water; lunch at local restaurant.

Feb. 21 & 22, Saturday - Sunday
Rio Grande Valley

This weekend trip will serve as an introduction to the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The locations we visit will be determined by what birds are being seen, and the desires of the trip participants. Contact Bob Doe (phone # in newsletter) Friday evening, Feb. 20 to learn meeting time and place. Make your lodging arrangements in the Pharr/McAllen/Mission area. Bob will be in the area a few days before and after for pre- and post-trip visits to other areas.

Helton Nature Park, Wilson County

Join Bill Zwartjes (207/501-7808) to explore the J. W. Helton San Antonio River Nature Park in Wilson County. To reach the park (30 minutes from downtown San Antonio), drive south on I-37 and take U.S. 181 toward Floresville. After passing FM 1604, continue about 5 miles and turn right on FM 775. Continue west on FM 775 for 1.2 miles and turn right at the gates at 15662 before crossing the river. Meet in the lower parking lot. The park is 98 acres along the river and includes a large group of mature pecans as well as the entrance of Calaveras Creek into the San Antonio River. Bring water and snacks. Lunch will be in Floresville

Haggard Ranch

Meet Metha at her ranch in South Bexar County. Go south on IH-35 about 4 miles south of Loop 1604. Take Exit 137 (Shepherd Road); go left on the northbound access road. Drive 0.5 mile to the gate (cattle guard). Consult the newsletter for entry info. Bring snacks and water.

Southwest High School

Meet leader Helen Rejzek (hmr78253@gmail.com or 210/679-7437) at the main parking lot by the athletic building at Southwest High School, 11914 Dragon Lane. The entrance is accessed off of Old Pearsall Road, across from the Valero Station. The bathrooms on campus might not be available, so take advantage of the gas station before you head to the parking lot. From South Loop 410 take Old Pearsall Road Exit. Turn right and go past the Medina River bridge. Entrance to the school is on the right. When you enter the gate, drive to the end of the road. You will see the large parking lot. Bring water and snacks.

Meet leader Sandi Wheeler (Wheels5683@gmail.com) in the parking lot of Max Starcke Park in Seguin. Take IH-10 East to Exit 167, TX46, in Seguin. Make a right onto TX46, go 1.5 miles, then turn left onto W. Court St. In 1.2 miles, turn right onto Guadalupe St. Make a slight right onto Austin St. and then a right onto River Drive West. Max Starcke Park will be on the right in .5 mile. Bring water, snacks, sunscreen and bug spray.

Land Heritage Institute
Meet Patsy and Alan Kuentz (210/422-3218 or apkuentz@aol.com) at the LHI gate on Neal Road. Take Exit 46 off Loop 410 on the south side and turn south on Morsund Blvd., which turns into Pleasanton Road. Turn right onto Neal Road about 5 miles south of 410. Follow Neal Road 2.3 miles to the road on the right to the gated entrance. A $3 donation is requested. Bring snacks and water.

Junction, Texas Hotspots

We will plan to meet Rhandy Helton at 8:00 AM. He will show us the local hotspots around Junction. Joshua Springs Park & Preserve

Meet leader Desi D'Orsogna (830/755-8642 or cell 361/648-2719) at the first parking lot in the park. Take IH-10 West to Exit 533(Welfare/FM289). After you exit, stay right and go past Po-Po's Restaurant. Veer left and follow FM 289 under IH-10 and make the first right. Park is on your left. Meet Don and Susan Schaezler (Warblerwoods@gmail.com) at their sanctuary in Cibolo. Take IH-35 north toward Austin. Take Exit 176, Wiederstein Road. Turn right on Wiederstein at the overpass. Turn left at the next road, Old Wiederstein. After you pass Dean Road, the Schaezler property begins on the right. Look for the green mailbox,19349 Old Wiederstein. Bring water, bug repellant and snacks.

Richland Creek WMA, East Texas

This trip will be limited to 15 people with priority given to SAAS members. Trip leaders will be D.D. Currie and Dell Little. D.D. and Dell lead trips around the state for the Texas Ornithological Society and other birding organizations. A $10 fee will be charged to help cover the leaders' expenses. Supper and Stars/Government Canyon

Join Niki Lake and Georgina Schwartz at Government Canyon SNA for an evening of stargazing. We will be looking for some meteorites on the very evening that the Perseids are at their peak. Bring your supper and lawn chairs. You can even cook out in the day use area. You can leave at any time but must be out by midnight. If it is cloudy, Niki promises us a program of interest. Contact her at 512/667-0786 or Georgina at 210/342-2073. More details as the time approaches. Entrance fees will be waived for us. Gate will be open from 6:00 to 6:45 PM.

Port Aransas, Corpus Christi, Hawkwatch
