Chris Bailey will lead a trip to some of the birding hotspots in Fayette County located near La Grange. We will make several stops, trying for as many birds as possible. Bring lunch and snacks. Not sure of our location at lunch time. Call Chris for meeting location and directions, 210/621-3025. Limit of 12 people.

SAAS Beginners’ Bird Walk

Meet Alan Kuentz at the Judson Nature Trails. From Broadway at the 5900 block, turn west on Ogden Street to the stop sign at Greely St. and the sign to the Nature Trails. Turn left, go one block and turn right on Viesca to the parking lot on the left before the swimming pool.Map

Leon Creek Greenway/Buddy Calk

Meet Bill Zwartjes (210/495-5123) in the main parking lot of the park. From Loop 1604, exit Babcock Road and drive south for about 2 miles to the Greenway and Park, which will be on your right. From IH-10, exit at DeZavala, drive west 1.7 miles to light at Babcock and turn right. The parking lot is about 0.7 miles on the left.

Crescent Bend Nature Park

Meet leader Sandi Wheeler (wheels5683@gmail.com) in the parking lot of the park. From San Antonio, take IH-10 east to the FM 1518 exit and go north toward Schertz. Look for a brown park sign at Schafer Road. Turn right and go 3 miles to the park. Entrance will be on your left before Cibolo Creek. Bring water and snacks.

Max Starcke Park & Riverside Park

Meet leader Georgina Schwartz (210/342-2073) in the parking lot of Max Starke Park and golf course in Seguin. Take I-10 East to US 90 exit to Seguin. Take US 90 E and exit to Alternate 90 (W Court Street) and follow it to Guadalupe Street. Take a right and follow this street all the way to the park where you will see big water tanks on the right. We will bird both parks. Lunch at a Mexican restaurant.

Sen. Frank L. Madla Natural Area

Meet leader Zachary Tonzetich (Zachary.tonzetich@gmail.com, 210/232-3670) in the parking lot. The park is on Menchaca Road in Grey Forest near Rancho Diana. Take Bandera Road (Highway 16) to Scenic Loop Road. Turn right on Scenic Loop Road and continue for about 2 miles. At Menchaca, turn right and continue until you see the rock and wood entry gate on your right.

Medina River Natural Area

Meet leader Helen Rejzek (hmr78253@gmail.com) in the main parking lot of the park. From Loop 410 South, take the Palo Alto/SH 16 Exit. Drive 4.2 miles south on SH 16; the park entrance is on the left before the Medina River bridge.

Haggard Ranch

We will meet Metha at her ranch in south Bexar County. Go south on I-35 about 4 miles south of Loop 1604. Take Exit 137 (Shepherd Road); go left over the bridge and then left on the access road. Drive 0.5 mile to the gate and cattle guard.  Go over second cattle guard, turn left at the fork to the house. Bring water and snacks. For info call Metha, 210/622-3886.

Warbler Woods

We will meet Sandi Wheeler (wheels5683@gmail.com) at Don and Susan Schaezlers’ sanctuary in Cibolo. Take I-35 north toward Austin. Take Exit 176, Wiederstein Road. Turn right on Wiederstein at the overpass. Turn left at the next road, Old Wiederstein. After you pass Dean Road, the Schaezler property begins on the right. Look for green mailbox, 19349 Old Wiederstein Road.

Palmetto State Park

Meet leader Karen Moulder (moulderkf@gmail.com or 210/824-2547) at the park HQ. From San Antonio, take I-10 East toward Houston. Take the US 183S Exit 632 toward Gonzales/Cuero. Take first right onto US 183S/E. Pierce and continue following US 183S. Turn right on TX Park Road 11. Park will be on the right. Bring your lunch and State Parks pass or $3 for entry fee.
